Hawks Take Down Covenant On The Road

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.- In their second CCS matchup, Huntingdon women's basketball (5-6 overall, 2-0 CCS) defeated the Covenant Scots (3-8 overall, 0-2 CCS) 73-67.

 

Highlights

 

First quarter

  • Covenant drew the first points of the game on their first possession, draining a shot from deep

  • The Hawks responded on the following possession with their first points of the game on a layup from Briana McGruder, putting Huntingdon down 3-2 within the first minute of the game.

  • Huntingdon took their first lead of the game with a layup from Kinstin Davis at the 6:11 mark, putting the Hawks ahead 6-5

  • Covenant evened the score at 8 with a shot from deep with 2:38 remaining in the quarter

  • Faith Johnson regave the Hawks the lead with an and-1 layup on the following possession, making the score 11-8

  • A three pointer from Kennedy-Ryan Jackson at the 1:51 mark extended the Huntingdon lead to 14-8

  • Two free throws from Covenant closed the quarter with the Hawks leading 15-12

 

Second quarter

  • The Hawks opened up the quarter on a 6-0 run with baskets coming from Charity Shaw, Kinstin Davis, and Deshauna Foote, pushing their lead to 21-12 with 7:50 remaining in the half

  • Faith Johnson responded with a jumpshot on the following possession to put the Hawks back ahead by 9, 23-14

  • A three point shot from Cassidy Campbell halted a 5-0 Covenant run, keeping the Hawks ahead 29-22

  • Huntingdon took a double digit lead with 1:32 to go in the half off of a layup from Kinstin Davis

  • Two free throws from Deshauna Foote with 25 seconds to go gave the Hawks a 35-24 lead going into halftime

 

Third quarter

  • Another triple from Cassidy Campbell brought the Huntingdon lead up to 12, 38-26 with 9:13 remaining in the quarter

  • A Covenant three pointer brought the score back within single digits, 38-29, with 8:22 to go in the quarter

  • Another shot from deep by the Scots brought Huntingdon's lead down to 4, 41-37 with 6 minutes to go in the quarter

  • The Hawks responded with a 5-0 run, bringing their lead back to 9, 46-37

  • A layup from Deshauna Foote with 4:13 remaining in the quarter put the Hawks back in control of a double digit lead, 48-37

  • The Scots buried a mid range shot to make the score 52-46 going into the final quarter

 

Fourth Quarter

  • A three point shot from Faith Johnson opened up the 4th quarter scoring, extending the Hawks lead to 55-46

  • Following another Scot triple, the Hawks held onto a 6 point lead, 59-53, with 5 minutes remaining in the game

  • Free throws from Briana McGruder and Faith Johnson extended the Huntingdon lead back to double digits, 63-53, with 3:53 remaining

  • A 7-1 Covenant run shrunk the Hawks lead to 64-60 with 2 minutes remaining

  • The Scots put in a layup with 1:39 remaining to bring the score within 2, 64-62

  • Two free throws from Kinstin Davis in the final 3 seconds iced the game for the Hawks, giving them a 73-67 victory over the Scots.

 

Key Notes 

  • Once Huntingdon took the lead in the first quarter, they held it throughout the rest of the game

  • Covenant shot 31% from three, making 9 of their 29 tries, while the Hawks made 22% of their triples

  • The Hawks forced 19 turnovers while only committing 7 of their own
