Hawks Late Run Puts Away Wesleyan

MONTGOMERY,Ala.- Huntingdon women's basketball (6-10 overall, 3-4 CCS) defeated the Wolves of Wesleyan College (1-13 overall,0-6 CCS) at home in a tightly contested matchup, 71-65.

 

How it happened

 

First Quarter

  • The Hawks got off to a quick start, taking a 8-3 lead by the 8 minute mark in the quarter

  • The Wolves responded with a 7-2 run to even the score at 10 with 5:38 to go in the quarter

  • Huntingdon went on a 7-0 scoring run of their own capped off by a layup by Makayla Ford, retaking the lead 17-10 with 3 minutes to go

  • Two free throws from Ford in the final seconds gave Huntingdon a 25-16 lead going into the second period

 

Second Quarter

  • An and-1 from Lauryn Lyn pushed Huntingdon's lead to double digits, 28-18 by the 8:50 mark in the quarter

  • Wesleyan went on an 8-2 run to shrink the Hawks lead to 30-26 with 6:24 remaining until halftime

  • Following a layup from Briana McGruder at the 4:20 mark, the Wolves closed the half on a 10-0 tear, taking a 38-33 lead into halftime over the Hawks

 

Third Quarter

  • Wesleyan continued their run into the second half, outscoring the Hawks 7-2 in the first 3 minutes of the third quarter

  • Two free throws from Briana McGruder put a half to the Wesleyan run, putting the Hawks down 45-37 with 6:38 remaining in the quarter

  • Wesleyan responded at the 5:04 mark in the quarter with a triple, maintaining their 8 point lead, 48-40

  • Free throws from Lauryn Lyn, Makayla Ford, and Kinstin Davis cut the Wolves lead to 48-44 with 2:37 remaining in the quarter

  • Makayla Ford rang home a triple at the 1:41 mark to reduce the Wesleyan lead to 49-47

  • Kinstin Davis finished a layup through contact in the final 25 seconds of the quarter to give Huntingdon a 50-49 lead going into the fourth

 

Fourth Quarter

  • Wesleyan retook the lead from the Hawks with a layup at the 7:59 mark, going up 52-51

  • With the score even at 53 with 6:25 to go in the game, Huntingdon found life with a 5-2 scoring run to take a 58-55 advantage in the final 5 minutes

  • A Wesleyan triple at the 3:42 mark cut the Huntingdon lead to 1, 61-60

  • A pair of free throws gave the Wolves a 62-61 lead with 3:05 remaining in the game, but Huntingdon retook a 64-62 lead with 2:19 to go

  • Not to be outdone, Wesleyan drilled a three with 2 minutes to go to go up 65-64

  • With their backs against the wall, Huntingdon responded with a clutch 7-0 run to close the game, securing a 71-65 victory over the Wolves

  • Huntingdon outrebounded Wesleyan 41-34

  • Each team lived at the free throw line, with Huntingdon converting on 22 of their 36 tries and Wesleyan making 20 of their 28 attempts

  • Huntingdon's bench fueled the Hawk's offense with 42 points
