Hawks Fall To Asbury At Home

MONTGOMERY, Ala.-  Looking to follow up on their road victory at Covenant earlier this week, Huntingdon women's basketball returned to Roland Arena to face off with Asbury University. In the first dual between the two squads since Asbury joined the Collegiate Conference of the South, the Eagles would utilize a late third quarter run to walk away with a 77-66 victory on the road.

First Quarter

  • Seeing baskets from Kinstin Davis, Briana Stuckey, Deshauna Foote, and Briana McGruder, the Hawks opened the game with a 7-0 run through the first five minutes of the quarter
  • Destiny Grider put in a layup at the 2:40 mark to push Huntingdon's lead to 16-9 before Asbury responded with a layup of their own to bring the score to 16-11 entering the second quarter

Second Quarter

  • Davis knocked down her first three of the afternoon on Huntingdon's opening possession of the second quarter to raise the lead to 19-11, but Asbury answered with a 8-0 run to tie things at 19 by the 6:29 mark
  • Following a layup from McGruder, a shot from deep capped off a 5-0 Eagle run that handed Asbury their first lead of the game 24-21 with 3:51 to go until halftime
  • The Eagles knocked down another three pointer at the 2:24 mark to raise their lead to 30-22, but five consecutive points from Makayla Ford joined by a layup from Briana Stuckey put the Hawks down 31-29 entering the halftime break

Third Quarter

  • After trading baskets to get the second half underway, 4 consecutive points from Stuckey brought Huntingdon within 1, 36-35 by the 4:46 mark in the quarter
  • Makayla Ford's second three-pointer of the game just 20 seconds later gave Huntingdon back the lead, 38-36
  • The Hawks were outscored 14-4 in the final three minutes of the third quarter to enter the final period of play facing a 50-42 deficit

Fourth Quarter

  • Two Asbury three-pointers to open the fourth quarter extended their lead to 56-44 by the 8:33 mark
  • A fourth Eagle triple at the 6:02 mark put Huntingdon behind 62-48
  • The Hawks battled back with a 7-0 run of their own to bring the score to 62-55 by the 4:38 mark, but a final 9-2 push from Asbury iced the game, handing the Hawks a 77-66 conference loss

The Hawks look to bounce back tomorrow, January 18th, as they square off with the Maryville Scots. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM CT.
