Hawks Overcome Slow Start To Blow Past Wesleyan

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Following up on their narrow victory at LaGrange, Huntingdon women's basketball returned to Roland Arena for a matchup with Wesleyan College. After falling behind 9-0 in the first quarter, the Hawks outscored the Wolves 26-8 in the second quarter to walk away with an emphatic 81-55 win at home.

First Quarter

  • As previously mentioned, Wesleyan jumped out to a 9-0 lead by the midway point in the quarter.
  • Huntingdon's first five points came on back-to-back possessions, with Makayla Ford following Kennedy-Ryan Jackson's jumper with a triple, but the Hawks still faced an 11-5 deficit by the 2:55 mark
  • Four consecutive free throws from Ford cut into the lead, but Huntingdon still trailed 17-14 entering the second quarter

Second Quarter

  • Featuring baskets from Deshauna Foote and Briana McGruder, the Hawks pieced together a 5-0 run to take a 19-17 lead by the 8:27 mark
  • A pair of free throws from Kinstin Davis sparked a 16-2 Huntingdon run that lasted through the majority of the quarter. The Wolves stopped the bleeding with a layup at the 1 minute mark, but the Hawks still led 35-23 entering the final minute
  • Five consecutive points from Makayla Ford brought the half to a close with Huntingdon in front 40-25

Third Quarter

  • Baskets from Davis and Briana Stuckey to start the half raised the Hawks lead to 45-27 by the 7:36 mark
  • A 6-0 Wesleyan run cut Huntingdon's lead to 47-33
  • Back-to-back three pointers from Ford and Cassidy Campbell raised the Hawks lead to 57-36 with two minutes remaining in the quarter
  • A Wesleyan free throw brought Huntingdon's lead to 59-39 entering the final quarter

Fourth Quarter

  • Trading baskets to open the fourth quarter, Payton Corbett's and-one layup at the 8:39 mark brought the score to 64-41 
  • Trinity Crane's three pointer at the 6:26 mark pushed Huntingdon's lead to 31, 74-43
  • As the game drew to a close, Wesleyan outscored Huntingdon 9-0 in the final five minutes, but the Hawks still managed to claim a 81-55 conference victory

  • The Hawks shot 45% from three, holding Wesleyan to just 10% 
  • Huntingdon outrebounded Wesleyan 41-27
  • 32 of the Hawks points came off of turnovers
  • The Hawks generated 58 points from the bench
