Division III Week Student Spotlight – Madi DeWees

This week is NCAA Division III Week and member institutions across the country are celebrating the ninth-year event. 

Division III Week, which runs from Monday through Sunday, is intended to recognize the academic and athletic accomplishments as well as the campus leadership and community service efforts of Division III student-athletes. 

As part of Huntingdon College's participation in Division III Week, 18 student-athletes will be featured this week. Lucy Burch, Mark Melchor and Madi DeWees are today's featured student-athletes.

Name: Madi DeWees

Year: Senior

Hometown: Rowlett, Texas

Major: Communication and Business Administration

Sport: Women's Golf           

                          

Athletic Accomplishments: DeWees was a four-year member of the women's golf team. She ranks sixth in program history in career rounds played, tied for sixth in program history in birdies and eighth in program history in career scoring average.

  

Academic Achievements and Campus Activities: DeWees has been named to the USA South Academic All-Conference team. She is a member of Chi-Omega, the Business Club, the Accounting Club and was awarded the Communication Award.

 

What made you feel like Huntingdon was the right place for you? "Huntingdon made me feel welcome. There was a close community-like family feel from my first visit."

 

As a student-athlete, what is your impression of Division III now compared to your first season? "My impression of Division III now compared to my first season is it's so much bigger than you could imagine. There are so many people, connections and friends among the division." 

 

With the COVID-19 pandemic changing the world we live in, what have you learned about the compassion and resiliency of your friends, family and classmates? "During the COVID-19 pandemic, I've seen the compassion and love people have for one another and how people all over are coming together." 

 

If you could offer one piece of encouragement at this time to your friends, family and classmates, what would it be?  "My piece of encouragement during this time to friends, family and classmates would be, everything passes and we are in this together."

 

What advice would you give our current underclassmen and incoming recruits to better prepare them for the next few years?  "My advice to underclassmen and incoming students would be to cherish all the moments Huntingdon has to offer. Make the most of your time with friends and teammates because there's nothing like it."

 

How has your experience at Huntingdon prepared you for life after Huntingdon? "My experience at Huntingdon has prepared me for life by teaching me values and commitment to everything I do."
