Huntingdon falls behind in loss at Averett

DANVILLE, Va.  – The Huntingdon women's lacrosse team scored the first two goals of the game but lost to Averett University 12-4 on Sunday.

Huntingdon matched Averett until late in the first half. Behind two goals from Shelby Barrett in the opening minutes of the game and one goal by Shelby Blair late in the first half, the score was tied 3-3 less than five minutes before halftime.

But Averett pulled away with seven straight goals. The Cougars scored three goals in the final 4:09 of the first half and four goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half to take a 10-3 lead.

Vanessa Maldonado scored the Hawks' final goal. Blair also had five draw controls and three ground balls. Alex Teague had three caused turnovers.

Goalie Morgan Coppini matched her career-high with 17 saves, picked up six ground balls and allowed 12 goals in 60 minutes. With the 17 saves, Coppini moved into second in program history with 219 career saves.
