Pearson’s first-place finish leads Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – Seven Huntingdon wrestlers placed in the top four of their weight classes in the Southeast Wrestling Conference Tournament on Saturday.

Quintez Pearson (149) placed first, Jack Haury (197) was second, Andrew Smith (125) was third and Michael Mort (141), Kaleb Fontenot (157), Gabriel Pittman (165) and D.J. Adams (197) each placed fourth.

As a team, Huntingdon scored 59 points to finish fourth. Ferrum won the five-team tournament with 138.5 points. The University of the Ozarks was second with 115 points and Greensboro was third with 97.5 points. Fontbonne was fifth with 24.5 points.

Pearson went 3-0 to win the 149-pound weight class. Pearson won all three matches by decision, winning 7-4 in the quarterfinals, 4-3 in the semifinals and 8-3 in the first-place match.

Haury was 2-1 in the 197-pound weight class. Haury won 7-3 in the quarterfinals and 10-4 in the semifinals to reach the championship match. He lost the first-place match 11-10.

Smith was 1-1 in the 125-pound weight class. Smith received a bye in the quarterfinals before losing 3-2 in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Smith received a bye before winning the third-place match 5-3.

Mort (141), Fontenot (157), Pittman (165) and Adams (197) were each 2-2 in their weight class.

Mort won by technical fall in the quarterfinals before losing by major decision in the semifinals. He won by decision in the consolation semifinals before losing by technical fall in the third-place match.

Fontenot lost by major decision in the quarterfinals before winning by pin in the consolation quarterfinals and semifinals. He lost by major decision in the third-place match.

Pittman won by decision in the quarterfinals and lost by decision in the semifinals. Pittman won by decision in the consolation semifinals and lost by pin in the third-place match.

Adams lost by technical fall in the quarterfinals before winning by pin in the first round of consolation. He won by decision in the consolation semifinals and lost by decision in the third-place match.

Four other Hawks won at least one match. Jacob Smith was 2-2 and finished fifth in the 141-pound bracket and Noah Bradford (149), Shade Lacombe (157) and Mac Hirsh (184) were each 1-3 and finished sixth.
