Huntingdon women’s soccer comes up short at Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Junior Kate Garrigan gave Huntingdon the lead early, but Covenant came back to win 2-1 on Saturday.

Garrigan gave Huntingdon a 1-0 lead, scoring from about 20 yards out in the ninth minute of the game. Covenant answered on a goal from Beth Wilkening with 69 seconds left in the first half. The score remained tied until the final seven minutes of the game. Covenant's Mo Cross scored on an assist from Bethany Logan to break the tie with 6:45 to play.

"The first half was probably our best display of the season so far. We were well composed and played as a team today," Huntingdon women's soccer coach Robert Milner said. "In the second half, it was a little more gritty. We had to defend a lot of shots and we conceded a late goal that made the difference.

"But we had a lot of girls step up and play well. Kate came through with a goal, Mary Kathryn Allen played well on defense and Sam Havel and Josie Byard both worked well at forward. We've still got work to do, but overall, this was one of our best performances of the season. Now we just need to keep pushing forward."

Kathleen Penney took a shot on goal for Huntingdon (0-4, 0-1 Great South Athletic Conference) and Byard had one shot. Keeper Jenny Burnash recorded six saves.

Covenant (4-1-1, 2-0 GSAC) took 27 shots for the game, eight of which were shots on goal.

The Lady Hawks travel to conference foe Wesleyan on Wednesday. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
