Hawks Fall To #9 Emory And Greensboro

ATLANTA,Ga.- To wrap up their season-opening tournament hosted by Emory University, Huntingdon volleyball(0-3 overall) was defeated by the #9 Emory Eagles(2-0 overall), 3-0 and the Pride of Greensboro College(2-1 overall) 3-1.

Game one vs #9 Emory

Following a day one victory against Greensboro, Emory was able to gain an early advantage on the Hawks, capitalizing on five early kills to take an 11-6 lead. Huntingdon kept battling, with Ashlen Janowski, Molly Wilson, and Izzy Valldeperas each earning kills, but with a match high seven errors, the Hawks were unable to complete a first-set comeback, dropping the first set 25-14.

The second set mirrored the first, with Emory jumping out to a 10-4 lead. Huntingdon was able to cut the deficit to 10-6, capitalizing on two Emory errors, but a 9-2 run from the Eagles gave Emory a 25-15 set win.

The Hawks continued to battle entering the third set, finding themselves even at 8 early, but 7 errors from the Hawks allowed for Emory to take the set and the game, 25-19.

 

Game two vs Greensboro

Huntingdon kicked off the second set with a renewed energy, taking a 5-2 lead over the Pride courtesy of an ace from Lindsey Holland and a kill from Sara Cochran. Greensboro responded with a 6-3 run to even the score at 8. After trading points over the next serves, Greensboro was able to capitalize on 8 Huntingdon errors, taking the opening set 25-18.

Following an opening set loss, the Hawks battled back with a 25-18 second set victory. Greensboro shot out to an 8-3 lead, but lead by Jessi Hilyer, Ashlen Janowski, and Lily VanDyke, Huntingdon opened up a 8-1 lead to take an 10-9 lead. Capturing their momentum from the seven-point swing, Huntingdon was able to hold the lead throughout the rest of the set. An ace from Jesis Hilyer capped off the set, evening the score 1-1.

In a highly contested third set, Greensboro answered with a 25-22 set victory. The Hawks started stong with a 3-2 lead, but a 7-2 Pride run gave the Pride the lead, and eventually the set. Greensboro secured 12 kills in the set over Huntingdon's 10 to cement their win.

To close the fourth set and the game, Greensboro gathered 14 kills while taking advantage of seven Huntingdon errors en route to another 25-22 victory. Huntingdon established an early lead, but a 6-0 run from the Pride gave Greensboro the lead and victory.

The Hawks look to bounce back on September 6th, kicking off a tournament at East Texas Baptist with a showdown against the host Tigers. Gametime is scheduled for 9:00 AM.
