Hawks Split Matches Vs Austin And Centenary

JACKSON, Miss.- In their second day of competition at the Millsaps College-hosted tournament, Huntingdon volleyball(2-9 overall) fell to Austin(4-4 overall) 3-0 in their first match, but recovered to take down Centenary(0-5 overall), with a 3-0 win of their own.

Game one vs Austin

To open their first match of the day, Huntingdon dropped their first set against Austin 25-12. The 'Roos shot out of the gate to take a quick 7-2 lead and never looked back, maintaining the lead throughout the duration of the set. The Hawks tried to respond, but ultimately their match-high 10 errors allowed for Austin to claim the opening set.

In contrast to the first set, the Hawks found themselves with a 5-3 lead following kills from Eva Ellenburg and Lindsey Holland. Austin answered with a run to tie the game at 6, eventually taking the lead 9-7. Led by Ellenburg and Ashlen Janowski, the Hawks managed to tie the game and take a 18-14 set lead, but the 'Roos put together a 11-3 run to close the set and take a 2-0 lead.

To close the game, Austin defeated the Hawks 25-23 in the third set. Taking advantage of their match high 13 kills, the 'Roos took a 2-1 lead that they never relinquished, walking away with the victory.

Game two vs Centenary

Looking to bounce back from their loss in the first match of the day, Huntingdon defeated the Centenary College Ladies 25-13 in the opening set. Ashlen Janowski and Morgan Suggs led the Hawks on an 8-2 run to open the game.  Molly Wilson followed the duo with a kill of her own to extend Huntingdon's lead to 12-3, and Huntingdon never looked back. Of the team's 34 total attempts, the Hawks saw 11 kills, including one from Lydia Hitchcock, with only four errors to take the 1-0 set lead.

Still hot, the Hawks claimed the second set, also by a score of 25-13. Following a relatively even start to the match, Huntingdon opened up a 12-2 run to distance themselves, going ahead 17-6. The Hawks efforts in establishing the firm lead were spread across the court, with Izzy Valldeperas, Morgan Suggs, Lindsey Holland, Eva Ellenburg, and Aly Harris all recording kills. The Hawks were able to take advantage of four late errors from Centenary to close the set and go ahead 2-0.

Maintaining their momentum from the opening two sets, the Hawks won the third set 25-12 to claim the match. Led by Morgan Suggs, the Hawks got ahead 5-1 in the earlier stages of the set. Centenary fought back, bringing the score within three at 11-8, but kills from Eva Ellenburg and Lydia Hitchcock combined with multiple Centenary errors allowed for the Hawks to distance themselves with a 20-10 lead. An ace from Molly Wilson followed by two more errors from the Ladies allowed Huntingdon to take the set and the match.
