Hawks Split CCS Tri-Match With Maryville And Wesleyan

MARYVILLE, Tenn.- Hitting the road for the last time in the regular season, Huntingdon Hawks volleyball(11-18 overall, 7-6 CCS) dropped their first match to the Scots of Maryville College(17-7 overall, 10-2 CCS) 3-0 before sweeping the Wesleyan College Wolves(2-16 overall, 1-12 CCS) three sets to none.

Game one vs Maryville

Maryville came out swinging to open the match, taking a 27-25 set victory. The two teams competed early and often, trading points to reach a 14-14 tie midway through the set. Maryville opened up a 4-0 run to hold a 18-14 lead, but the Hawks responded with a 3-0 run of their own, featuring a kill from Destin Roberts, to bring the deficit within one at 18-17. Back-to-back kills from Izzy Valldeperas put the Hawks ahead late 20-19, but Maryville's 21 kills on the set would prove to be too much, giving the Scots a 1-0 advantage.

The second set also belonged to the Scots by a score of 25-20. The Hawks led the majority of the set, with aces from Roberts and Ashlen Janowski pushing their lead to 16-14, but a late 7-0 run from Maryville gave the Scots the second set victory.

To claim the match in three sets, Maryville defeated Huntingdon 25-17 in the final set. Making the most of their attempts with only two errors, Maryville claimed the lead 7-6 and never looked back. 

Game two vs Wesleyan

The opening set of the match belonged to the Hawks 25-5. Huntingdon maintained a perfect offensive attack throughout the duration of the set, recording 14 kills without committing a single error. Kills from Ashlen Janowski both opened and closed the set, as she sparked a 6-0 run for the Hawks before Wesleyan put their first one over the net and put a stamp on the Hawks set victory by capping off a seperate 4-0 run.

Wesleyan battled to kick off the second set, as the Wolves responded to a six point Huntingdon run with a four point run of their own to reduce the deficit to 6-4. Lindsey Holland spiked one over the net to extend the Hawks lead to 8-5, leading the Huntingdon to outscore the Wolves 17-8 throughout the rest of the set and claim a 25-13 victory.

Ending the match just as they started it, the Hawks recorded 12 kills while holding Wesleyan to just four en route to a 25-8 set victory. Ahead 22-8, Aly Harris sent one over the net before two Wesleyan errors to complete the conference sweep.
